Gnawing Gnat

Level: ?
Drops: ?
Location: near the north-western entrance of Mun-Tuy Cellars

Anyone doing this quest close to the sign-up level will face some difficulty. There is one circular room with the gnats, and it is full of them. These gnats, naturally, aggro, and have all the regular gnat abilities, and thus are perfectly capable of poofing on you and disappearing in the midst of many others even if you pull them.
Thaumaturges and Black Mages should be doubly wary of doing this quest at lower levels, for naturally the gnats are resistant to Thunder.

Gnats in the Way

Francis: Yes, I am Francis. Do I know you, friend No matter, what can I d- Eh? My mother? Beside herself with worry!?
Then, y-you know of Hildie, as well? Of my past? I see… It shames me to say it, but I left my home some time ago. I spoke words I…I should not have spoken. In the end, I left because I had nothing to give. I left to make a name for myself, and to be my own man.
But I found that the streets of Ul'dah are not paved with gold, friend. They are paved with the carcasses of imbeciles like me, seeking fame and fortune. I was chewed up and spit out, and left the desert with no place to go. I wandered, aimlesly, and before long came to be lost in this forest.
It was the Wood wailers who saved me from certain death. The people of Gridania took me in, and have treated me as one of their own. I joined the Wailers to repay my debt to them - to feel useful, for the first time in my life.
But how can I call myself a true man and protector of the people when I lack the strength to ease my own mother's woe? Please, adventurer, lend me your aid.
Ferocious wolves prowl the Twelveswood, near the Mun-Tuy Cellars. They grow bolder by the day, and more and more souls are being attacked - travelers, gatherers, merchants. Sadly, the Wailers are undermanned. I intend to go after the foul beasts myself.
I will never be a rich man able to send gil home by the bushel, but if I can at least send my mother proof that her son is a lancer able to fell feral beasts…perhaps that will go some way to ease her worry. Will you help me?
The place where the wolves lurk is infested with gnawing gnats. Kill eight of the foul pests to clear a battleground for me. My war with the wolves will be much the better with it.
(quest accept)
Francis: You are a true comrade! Go now, and see those damnable gnats dead.

Trophies and Thoughts

Francis: It is good to see you returned, and safely! You have my thanks for killing those pesky gnats.
I'd hate to fight rabid wolves with those vexatious vermin flitting about. Behold! A fine haul of wolves' tails, is it not? Hahaha! I'd like for you to present these to my mother, courtesy of her loving son.
The distance is great, I know. I ask a great deal of you, but I must ask it nonetheless.
(obtain a wolf tail trophy)

Francis: Please, take these trophies of wolf tails to my mother. The distance is great, I know. I ask a great deal of you, but I must ask it nonetheless.

(Limsa Lominsa)
Imania: <Player>! You bring news! Tell me at once! <gasp> You saw my Coster? And these are from him!?
In Gridania now, is he? It does my heart good to hear he is well. That it does.
So good of you to come all this way. Forgive an old salt wife for putting you to such trouble. Please, take this. It's the very least I can do.
Perhaps I'll make the trip to Gridnia myself one of these days. These old bones have withered by the sea long enough.
