Knowing the Beast

S174 - Knowing the Beast

Never become attached. The rules on this are clear. But it is not so easy to leave one who has fought so long at your side. A dreamhare I had ensorceled lamed its leg and lies wounded in the mountains near Camoa. Will you help me rescue the poor creature?

Ceva, Beastmaster

The most important thing here is to defend the bridge. Four rounds is actually quite a long time, so park relatively high-defense characters on the bridges to block the monsters, and keep your people healed up.

It is pointless to kill any of the monsters - they will simply be replaced by another of the kind you killed, randomly leveled 3-5, with the same abilities. However, this quest isn't very hard, so it might be more interesting killing things than simply standing around defending.

Ceva and Cappy, by the way, do not move, and just choose "Wait" on their turns.

Ceva: There there, Cappy.

Ceva: Be not afraid, little one.
We will protect you.

Wolf: *growl*

Player: I don’t like the way those monsters are eyeing that dreamhare.

Ceva: They mean her no good, to be sure.
Hold them back while I tend to her wounds.

Wolf: *slaver*

Player: Right. We’ll keep you safe while you take care of Cappy.
Those monsters won’t make it across if I have anything to say about it!

Player: They just keep coming, don’t they.

Cappy: !

Ceva: See? That wasn’t so bad, was it?

Ceva: That should do it!
I think Cappy can walk again!

Player: Great! Now let’s get out of here!
One thing’s been bugging me, though. How come you can understand what she says?
I mean, you can’t really talk to her…can you?

Ceva: All beastmasters speak the language of the beasts.
It’s not language as you might know it, but it is there to be heard if you’ve ears to listen.

Ceva: She wants me to tell you “thank you.”
Oh? I think she has something else to say.

Ceva: What a splendid idea!
She thinks I should teach you the secrets of the beastmaster.

Ceva: After all you’ve done for us, it’s the least I can do.
But know this…
The bond between beast and master lasts only till battle’s end.
You must always be mindful of growing too attached.
Of course, I’ve been fortunate enough to win this wee one’s heart.
So I’m going to find a nice quiet place for the two of us to call home. Come, Cappy!
