Automaton is the pet of the Puppetmaster job in Final Fantasy XI. They are built of various parts and can be customized with several other parts for more abilities and other capabilities. All Puppetmasters gain their Automaton with default parts during the quest to unlock the job. To call it forth, the ability Activate must be used.
An Automaton can be dismissed with the Deactivate command. If this is done on full or close to full HP, the Activity command will be available immediately. Should the Automaton die before being deactivated, the recast will be longer.
That the Automaton's level is the same as the Puppetmaster's. However, if the PUP gains a level while an Automaton is already deployed, the Automaton won't gain that level automatically. It must first be deactivated and then re-activated.
Note that once the PUP reaches level 99, the Automaton's level can be further raised by equipping an Animator of a higher item level.
Building the Automaton
By default, the Automaton starts with Harlequin head and frame. Head and frame are the two basic parts required for an Automaton, and you can combine them as you wish. The frame provides the basic stats and capabilities while the head provides behavior, modifies the basic stats, and says what skill level spells can be used. Automatons can also be customized with attachments that provide stat boosts or abilities.
To make a comparison, the frame of an Automaton functions much like a player character's race, the head like a job, and attachments like equipment.
Heads and Frames
As noted above, heads and frames can be chosen from and combined freely, as long as you first possess the item to use on your Automaton.
To gain new heads and frames, a quest must be completed on PUP. This quest can be repeated every 10 levels past level 10 to for one type of head+frame at a time. The level 10 heads and frames can thus be gained one each at levels 10, 20 and finally 30 to complete the set, while the two specialist level 40 heads can be gained at level 40 and 50, in order of your choosing. See here for details of the quest.

Attachments
Attachments are basically Automaton gear. Attachments cost a certain amount of elemental capacity to equip, and each Automaton can equip Attachments up to the limit provided by its head+frame combination (see below in 'Stats/Elemental Capacities' for details).
To gain access to an attachment, you must first acquire the item and place it in your Automaton's inventory. This happens by trading the item to Tateeya. Note that only one of each type of attachment is required to make it always thereafter available to your Automaton.
The behavior of attachments can be modified by Maneuver-type abilities done by the PUP. See below in 'Maneuvers' for more information.
To see a list of all attachments, see here.
Names
During the quest to unlock the Puppetmaster job, you must give a name to your Automaton. This can initially be done only from list #1 of names. However, after finishing the unlock quest you can chance to PUP and change the Automaton's name to one from the full lists of names. To do so, speak to Abda-Lurabda on PUP. Changing the name costs 9,800 gil.

Stats
An Automaton's stats will depend entirely on what parts were used for it. The frame provides the basic stats, and heads modify some of them.
Basic Stats
Basic stats for Automatons are gained the same way as for player characters. They are determined by the Automaton's frame, and are raised with its job level. They can be modified by equipping attachments.

Combat Skills
Automatons gain combat skills as player characters do, by using it. However, their skills are slightly different from what player characters have available to them. Moreover, while the basic skill ranks are provided by the frame, certain heads provide bonuses to certain skills. A +1 in skill from a head will, for example, boost a B- rank skill to a B.
Note that if a frame doesn't have a rating in some skill, it means that any Automaton built using that frame can't use that skill. Even when that non-existent skill is modified by a head that raises the skill, it does not enable its use.
The first table below displays the skill rank boost provided by each head. The second displays the native skill ranks of each frame, as well as the skill rank of each frame when modified by each type of head. The third table displays the skill caps on certain levels for each of the ranks possible for Automatons. Please match the skill rank of your Automaton's frame/head combination with the skill rank of this third table to find out your skill cap.

Elemental Capacities
The elemental capacities of an Automaton determines how many and which attachments it can equip at a time. They are determined by the combination of the head and frame the Automaton is built out of.

Abilities
The Automatons abilities work slightly differently from a player character's. Most abilities are learnt not according to job level, but according to corresponding combat skill level, as determined by its head/frame combination.
Some additional abilities and traits are provided by attachments. They have not currently been listed here.
Weaponskills
The weaponskills available to an Automaton are determined solely by its frame and its current skill level in the corresponding combat skill, as listed below.
Harlequin/Stormwaker Frame
Melee 0 - Slapstick
Melee 145 - Knockout
Melee 225 - Magic Mortar
Sharpshot Frame
Ranged 0 - Arcuballista
Ranged 150 - Daze
Ranged 245 - Armor Piercer
Ranged 324 - Armor Shatterer
Valoredge Frame
Melee 0 - Chimera Ripper, String Clipper
Melee 150 - Cannibal Blade
Melee 245 - Bone Crusher
Melee 324 - String Shredder
Spells
When it comes to spellcasting, it bears noting that only the Harlequin and Stormwaker frames are capable of casting magic. However, the spell list available to the Automaton is instead determined by its head instead of the frame. Like weaponskills, the spells that can be currently used from among that list are determined by the Automaton's combat skill level.
