Overview
This place details the different faces available for picking when you are creating a playable character in Final Fantasy XI. In the character creation, besides picking your character's appearance listed below (race, gender, face and hair) you will also have to pick your character's size (small, medium or large, referring to their height), a job from the six available jobs, and the world where your character will be created.
Alongside those options you will also be given the chance to input a Gold World Pass code should you have one.
For every race/gender combination there are a total of eight different faces to choose from, with each of those eight faces having two hair color variations. Because of this, it is very easy to identify any given player character face by short-hands such as "Elvaan female 2B" or "Mithra 7A". In these short-hands the number refers to the number of the face type and the letter to the hair color, with the order of these two taken from the in-game character creation.
Disclaimer
This page also doesn't list all the possible character faces, and is instead focused on the A-type faces (or more clearly, the default hair type for each face). Because of this it might give a one-sided view of the races. For the full list of player character faces please refer to a dedicated Final Fantasy XI site, such as FFXIclopedia.
Note that the player character faces aren't exclusive to player characters, and some generic NPCs around Vana'diel will have the same appearance. The names associated with the faces are nicknames from the development times, in English version only used to refer to the faces when picking them as POL icons for your account.
The give some insight into the face distribution within the game, information from the Vana'diel Census 2008 have been included for each race. To put the face distribution into perspective, you can see the race/gender distribution among all worlds in the graph below.

Elvaan
The Elvaan race is strong and sturdy, although not quite as sturdy as the Galka. They are not very agile or dexterous, and have quite a small MP pool, not to mention that their intelligence isn't the best either. That is counteracted by their extremely high mind stat.
Items
The Elvaan player will start with the items below, as well as a weapon and/or other job-specific starter item. Should the character be created in San d'Oria, they will also start with the item San d'Orian Ring.
Note that the male and female versions of the set have the same stats.
Body: Elvaan Jerkin / Elvaan Bodice
Hands: Elvaan Gloves / Elvaan Gauntlets
Feet: Elvaan M Chausses / Elvaan F Chaussets
Legs: Elvaan M Ledelsens / Elvaan F Ledelsens

Hume
The Humes are all-rounders, fit for a player who is not quite certain what job they would like to play in the end. In exchange for their average stats in everything, there is the flipside that they have no outshining stats either.
Items
The Hume player will start with the items below, as well as a weapon and/or other job-specific starter item. Should the character be created in Bastok, they will also start with the item Bastokan Ring.

Mithra

Any aspiring player wanting to play a Mithra character should note that the males of the race aren't playable.
Items
The Mithra player will start with the items below, as well as a weapon and/or other job-specific starter item. Should the character be created in Windurst, they will also start with the item Windurstian Ring.

Galka
The Galka are a sturdy and strong race severely lacking in magic-related stats. Any Galka mage should learn early on the importance of MP management. However, due to their natural high HP and defense, they can take more hits than a character of any other race.
Any aspiring player wanting to play a Galka character should note that the race has only males, no females at all.
Items
The Galka player will start with the items below, as well as a weapon and/or other job-specific starter item. Should the character be created in Bastok, they will also start with the item Bastokan Ring.
