Ranger (狩人 [karyuudo] or 'hunter' in Japanese) was originally added in Final Fantasy III. They were the original archery specialists, and were associated heavily with nature. While the Archer's typical colors are yellow and brown, Ranger is represented by green and brown. There is also an alternate translation for this job, Hunter.
Rangers are masters of archery and marksmanship, and can also call forth the powers of wildlife to their aid. As befitting the image of the ranger, they are also associated with hunting. Their signature move is Barrage. Examples of Rangers would be Perih Vashai and Semih Lafihna from FF11 and King Freyr from Dimensions.

Rangers are good backline damage dealers. While this remains their only advantage on a freshly started job, on high levels Ranger learns Rapid Fire, which is one of the two or three most useful abilities in the game, and just about required for each of your characters.
