Along with several others, the Black Mage (usually 黒魔道士 / 黒魔導士 [kuro madoushi] in Japanese, but also 黒魔術士 [kuro majutsushi]) is one of the most iconic jobs in Final Fantasies. It has been present from the very beginning at FF1, and is instantly recognizable with its dark blue robes, yellow hats and glowing eyes. Black Wizard was its original advanced job, and other similar ones include Magus, Sage and Scholar among others.
Black Mages are casters of damaging and enfeebling spells of all types. They are feeble of body but great of mind. Several examples of black mages are Palom of FF4, Vivi Ornitier of FF9, Lulu of FF10, Shantotto of FF11, Kytes of FF12RW and Ququruka of FF14.

While Black Mage is a basic job, it is not nearly as vital to the party as its counterpart White Mage. In fact, Black Mage can be safely ignored if you wish so, in favor of other magic damage-dealing jobs that you obtain later on.
