Alchemist (錬金術師 [renkinjutsushi] in Japanese) is one of the lesser known and used Final Fantasy jobs. As far as can be determined, it is an evolved form of the job Chemist, which appeared in the series considerably earlier than Alchemist.
Alchemists are item specialists, quite like Chemists. However, Alchemists can also use high-level magic, which separates them from their more mundane counterparts. Their special command is either Mix or Item. Characters associated with the Alchemist job is Ezel Berbier from Tactics Advance and Meeth Crym from Ring of Fates. It can also be argued that Rikku from Final Fantasy X is partially an Alchemist.
Final Fantasy X-2
The Alchemist job in FFX-2 (アイテムシューター [item shooter] in Japanese, so originally a job that merely had some limited alchemist-like features) is more similar to the Chemist in earlier games than the Alchemist in later games. They can use the familiar Mix command characteristic of the Chemist job, and use a machine gun of sorts instead of staffs typical to mage jobs. In fact, Alchemist in FFX-2 cannot use any actual magic, and their stats are more typical of the Chemist job, with their low Magic stat. They also have access to Stash, an ability to use a a consumable item without actually consuming it.
Obtain
To be able to obtain the Alchemist dressphere, you must talk to Clasko in either chapter 1 or chapter 2 at Mushroom Rock Road, regardless of which timing you use to actually obtain it.
After you're done with the missions he's involved in (Foggy Fiend Frenzy in ch1 and/or Cuckoo for Chocobos at Mi'ihen Highroad in ch2), go back to Mi'ihen Highroad in ch2 and talk to him again. Invite him aboard the Celsius.
With Clasko aboard, head to the Calm Lands and Monster Arena. The dressphere is the prize for completing the mission Clean Sweep. If you missed this last step during chapter 2, you can also complete in chapter 3 or 5, but only if you did everything else in chapter 2.

The Alchemist job in FHL is, as per usual, an item specialist. There are two other item specialists jobs in the game (Doctor and Traveler), but while those concentrate on healing items and making it easier to use items, an Alchemist will raise the attack power of attacking-type items. Their Mind and Intelligence stats are relatively high.
The Alchemist Crown is unlocked by defeating the demon Beelzebub in the Tower to the Heavens.
