Mythril (ミスリル [mythril] in Japanese) is a substance rather like silver, but it is stronger, lighter, and much more valuable. It is often used to make weapons and armor in addition to jewelry. The weapons and armor made of mythril are often not among those best in terms of strength, but they are usually not among the worst either.
There is another variation of Mythril known in Japanese as ミスリル銀 [mythril-gin] or 'Mythril Silver'. Despite the name it is the exact same thing as regular mythril, but is used to refer to the mythril ore exclusively.

The name 'mithril' has its origin in The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien. The name itself is of elvish origin, but it was dwarves that mined it and used it in their craft. In fact, the desire of the dwarves to get their hands on more mithril drove them to release a demon from the depths of the earth, and led to the destruction of their country.
