Dissidia Final Fantasy is a PSP game described as Dramatic Progressive Action by Square Enix. It allows you to set heroes and villains from various Final Fantasy games against each other, and features a story mode as well as a free-form quick battle mode and the possibility to play against others online. The selection of playable characters includes 22 different characters, 10 of which are available in a fresh new game. The rest must be unlocked.

The game gives you the option of installing part of the data on your memory stick to reduce loading times. It is possible to install a total of 243 or 526 MB of data, pick the one that is suitable for your needs. During the installation, you can press the L and R buttons to hear the sound of chocobo and moogles.
The game's save data takes an additional minimum of 448 KB of free space on your memory stick.

When you start a new game, the first thing the game does is ask for your name, play plan and special day. All these settings can be changed later.
The name default is the name of your PSP, and will be displayed in the save data. Play plan gives you three different options to choose from to begin with - whether you play little, moderately, or a lot. On this setting depends how often your chocobo will find you items and what item he will find. And finally the special day will determine which day of the week you will have a lucky day on. Choose wisely, for on that day you will receive gil, AP and PP bonuses. These bonuses are available on other days too, but not all on the same day.
After completing the player data setup, you will be given your first pages of the tutorial. The tutorial is ever-present and can on almost any screen be found by pressing Start. The tutorial advices you to start your game by completing the Prologue tutorial in story mode. This can be accessed by choosing Story Mode and then Prologue. Without completing it, you cannot continue on to the rest of the story mode.

The game works mainly under three different play modes. The first of these is the aforementioned story mode, in which you complete sets of missions and unlock further parts of the story as you complete previous ones. The second is the quick battle mode, where you can freely battle any characters against each other in a setting and rule set of your choosing. The third is the ad-hoc mode, allowing you to play online. More on these modes below.

To buy items and unlock various additional goodies and abilities in Dissidia, you gain two different currencies from battles. The first is gil, the familiar unit of money from other Final Fantasy games. Gil is shared between characters and can be used to buy new equipment from the shop. Do note, however, that sometimes buying an item from the shop may require trading in items as well.
The second currency is PP, and it is also shared between characters. After unlocking the PP Catalogue you can unlock various goodies with by exchanging PP for them. These include the villain characters from the first ten Final Fantasies, alternate forms for every character, additional player icons, better chances to gain items after battles, new battle maps, etc.

In battles your characters will gain two different kinds of experience points. These are the familiar EXP and AP, or EXperience Points and Ability Points. Experience points make your characters grow in levels, and ability points allow your characters to master their abilities, thus lowering the cost of equipping them. The amount of AP gained after each battle is added to the AP total of each of your un-mastered abilities. They may require hundreds of AP to master, so do try to gather as many as you can in each battle. The default AP you gain in one battle is a mere one point. To gain more AP in one battle, simply fulfill the requirement given to you in the beginning of the battle.

Battle Basics

Battle is at the basis of it very simple. A good deal of your time, however, will be spent in preparing for battles. To prepare, open the Customize menu with the triangle button. The options you need to be concerned with are Abilities, Equipment, Accessories and Summons. See the Items and Abilities sections below for more info on setting them up. After preparing, engage an opponent in the mode of your choice. To see more info about engaging an opponent, see the mode of your choice below in the section Play Modes.

To start with some information on your opponent will be displayed. Depending on if they have anything equipped, you might see the screens Items (what items your opponent has equipped), Accessories (what accessories they have equipped) and Battle Rise (the accessories you have a chance of obtaining in this battle, and the percentage possibility and condition for how to obtain them). It is adviced to check especially what accessories your opponent has equipped, for that might drastically change the strategy required to win.

At the very beginning of the fight the screen will display the condition for extra AP and you and your opponent posing. After this, you can start inputting commands. Note that the list of commands you have available will vary according to which abilities you have equipped.
The lower part of the screen will feature two sets of numbers. The more prominent one counts Brave, which is your attack strength relative to your opponent's. Stealing Brave from your opponent and preventing your opponent from stealing yours forms the basis of every battle. HP in relation to this is relatively insignificant, only telling you how long you will survive the battle. Note that an opponent with full Brave can basically one-shot you if your own Brave is low.
At the edges of the screen next to the Brave and HP counters you will find your EX gauge. When the purple gauge is full, you can activate your EX mode. When activated, it will empty over time and as you make actions. For more information on EX mode, see EX Mode in the Abilities section.
When you fight, you may notice messages on the upper right and left corners of the screen. Left is you and right is your opponent. These display the experience, AP, DP and items gained as well as some other things.

At times on the map will appear a blue winged bell, an EX core. An EX core will fill up your EX gauge by a whole lot, much more than the small floating blue balls that appear with a successfull hit. It is adviced to gather them for yourself when battling, for your opponent can get tricky if you allow them to change into EX mode.

With victory, you are displayed levels gained, abilities learned or mastered, and other spoils of battle. In case of defeat, you are given the option of trying again. The specifics of this will depend on which mode you are playing in.

Calendar and Mognet

One of the menus in the game is the calendar screen. It will display the next week and tell on which days you will gain extra AP, PP, EXP or gil bonuses. It will also tell which day your special day is on, and how many days until it comes again.

From the calendar screen you can also access letters received through Mognet. Each day you will receive one or more letters from various moogles. They might give you gifts and ask you questions with each letter. Be sure to check your letters every day to gain all they have to give to you.


 Missions in Dissidia are mostly not something you would need to concern yourself over. You will complete missions automatically when you fulfill the requirements, and gain rare accessories are prizes. However, it might be a good idea to keep an eye on the menu due to the somewhat complicated nature of some of the missions.

Friend Cards

The friend card is your ID while battling online. It will display a player icon and message, your 'ghost' (a character you choose to represent yourself and that others can fight against when you're not online) and their rank, as well as several other things. You can exchange friend cards with others online, or leave the roaming mode on your PSP and automatically exchange cards with people you pass that also have Dissidia's roaming mode on.

There are also several pre-set friend cards in the game. You can obtain them through mognet letters and by unlcoking them with specific passwords.

To input passwords into the system to unlock friend cards, player icons and rare accessories, you must type them in place of your friend card message. See Dissidia Passwords for more info.


There are several different kinds of items in Dissidia. These can be roughly divided into items and accessories, and both of them have several sub categories.

Items are divided into weapons, armor, head equips and hand equips. All items are equippable. You generally obtain them by buying them from the shop, but can also receive them as drops from opponents or pick them up from the destiny board in story mode.

Accessories are various items with varying additional effects. They can affect damage dealing or reduction directly in percentages, add or subtract values from your stats, or make you stronger when specific conditions are met. Most accessories are permanent (unless you sell them), but some break after battles.
In addition to equipping them in battles, some of the accessories are required to buy more accessories from the shop. The accessories you trade in for goods can most often be obtained by achieving a Battle Rise in battle. Specific conditions must be fulfilled for a Battle Rise to occur.
Finally, there is a type of accessories called recipes only obtainable by inputting passwords. These are used to buy rare items and accessories from the shop.

Items and accessories are shared between characters. Since you cannot use two characters at the same time in battle, should you want to you can equip the same items on every character even if you have only one of the item. To unlock more goods at the shop, buy available items and train your characters. More will appear in time.

A third type of items could be said to exist. They only appear on the destiny board in story mode, and have immediate effect upon contact. They cannot be saved for later or carried with you.

Characters learn abilities in two ways - by level-up and by mastering abilities. Learning them doesn't demand anything else but fighting and remembering to set up your abilities after learning them - an ability cannot gain the AP required to master it if it isn't equipped.

You can set your abilities under the Abilities menu in Customize. There are two basic types of abilities, attack abilities and basic abilities. Attack abilities are further divided into Break and HP attacks, and both of those into ground and air attacks. With three of each kind of attacks available, this gives you the possibility to set a total of 12 different attacks to use in a battle. The actual attack ability count may be higher than this, however. After mastering an ability you may at times unlock a combo attack that ties into the basic attack you mastered. The combo attack doesn't take up an attack slot by itself, but expands on the basic attack's slot.
When setting abilities be sure to check how to execute each attack in battle. Some are very simple, but especially with pulling off combo attacks the button sequence can get longer and may even have two different paths for two different ends.

Basic abilities are not attacks, but instead abilities that allow you to for example dodge attacks or guard against them, or maybe dash or counter. Basic abilities are divided into three types; action, support and extra.
Action abilities are the aforementioned move-action type abilities. Support abilities when equipped make the character perform some action abilities automatically or make playing easier in other various ways. Extra abilities vary in effect, and may for example make your critical hit rate go up while in EX mode.

To set up abilities CP or Capacity Points are required. Each ability has a certain cost for equipping, and you must have at least that amount of free CP to equip it. To gain more CP you must either level up or equip accessories that raise your CP. Another way to gain more CP is mastering abilities. When an ability is mastered, its CP cost will halve.

EX Mode

EX mode is a short-timed stronger form of a character or their weapon. In EX mode they may change appearance and will have stronger attacks as well as additional abilities. These abilities and traits are specific to each character, view the character's page to check what abilities they have available. A list of the characters in Dissidia is here.

To activate EX mode, you must have a full EX gauge (the purple vertical gauge by the side of the screen), and your EX mode will run out of time when the gauge hits zero. The time can be lengthened by gathering EX cores, just like you were still gathering strength to activate it in the first place.

After executing an HP attack in EX mode, you have the possibility of doing an EX burst. This is a strong final attack comparable to limit attacks in other Final Fantasies. Completing an EX burst properly requires certain button presses, dependant on the character in use.
When you are attacked with an EX burst, it is possible to lessen the damage you receive from it. To do this, simply keep pressing the circle button as fast as you can. The gauge by the side of the screen shows how well you are doing. However, be careful in the upper reaches of the gauge. It is possible to reach an area in which the damage you receive is not lessened, but is in fact greater than it would have been without any action.


There are two kinds of summons in Dissidia, those that are summoned automatically when certain conditions are fulfilled, and those that you must summon yourself. Summons that are summoned automatically have the word 'Auto' next to their name. Each summon has unique abilities (although they mostly have to do with manipulating Brave), and if they are the automatic kind they also have unique situations in which they summon themselves.

To be able to summon anything, you must have it equipped. This can be done in the menu Summons / 召喚獣 under Customize. You can have only one summon active at any time. However, each summon has charges that are used up when summoned. To recharge them, they must be non-active in a battle. To set up non-active summons choose the third option and set your order of preference for the summons. When your active summon has used up all its charges, the next one in line will become active, and the summon with no charges left will stay in line and recharge.

To obtain summons, you must either pick them up from the destiny board in story mode or obtain as prizes when having a certain number of DP left after a level. You cannot obtain summons any other way.

PP Catalogue

The PP catalogue allows you to buy or unlock various goodies or new abilities in the game. It is unlocked by playing the story mode, and new goods appear with further advancement in story mode. It is divided into five different categories - Character, System, Calendar, Icon and Etc.

The Character category allows you to unlock the villains as playable characters, alternate forms for every playable character, as well as encounter voices and sample voices for every character for the museum. System allows unlocking of more skills for story mode, obtaining spoils of battle even if you lose an online fight, various additional battle maps, and playing against opponents greater than your level in quick battle mode. The Calendar category concerns the days you get bonuses on and how strong those bonuses are, and Icon lets you unlock additional player icons for your friend card. Etc has various abilities, like unlocking more courses for the chocobo and raising the possibility of obtaining item drops or achieving a battle rise.
All other PP catalogue items you can only buy once except the possibility of obtaining item drops or raising battle rise chance. These affect only as many subsequent battles as you buy them for.


The museum allows you to view additional information about characters and summons, and view or replay graphics, voices and cutscenes. You can unlock more content for the museum by advancing the story mode, buying content from the PP catalogue, and obtaining summons and additional characters. It is divided into six different sections, the Character Library, Summon Library, Theater, Player Icon gallery, Records and Battle Replay.

The Character Library and Summon Library are self-explanatory, they simply contain information and graphics about the characters and summons. Player Icon gallery displays all the unlocked player icons, and at the same time allows you to see how many you still have unlocked. Records section has various character rankings, among them the highest leveled characters, how long each character has spent in battle, how many battles they have won and lost, and many other things.

The Theater section has three different options, those of cutscenes, background music and character voices. To view cutscenes you must have seen them in story mode, and additional character voices you can unlock from the PP catalogue under the Character category.

Battle Replay allows you to view battles you have recorded. The ability to do so is unlocked by advancing the story mode. Once recorded, you can view the battle normally and from different angles, make it into a video file for your own pleasure or for sharing with friends and the world, and screenshot the battle. To save videos and screenshots your memory card must have the space for them. If your memory card is running out of space, simply transfer the files you have made to the computer and delete them from the memory card to make more space.
