Hyur

Overview

Hyur (ヒューラン [hyuran] in Japanese) are the human-equivalent race in Final Fantasy XIV. They have elsewhere been known as humes as well.

Hyurs are divided into two tribes that we know of, those of Midlanders and Highlanders. Midlanders are by far the more common of the two, and originated in the temperate midlands with plenty of land for agriculture. They are known for their diverse cultures. Highlanders originated in the highlands, and are of stronger stature than Midlanders and more oriented towards war than their normally peaceful cousins.

History

The Hyur arrived to Eorzea in three distinct waves, each bringing their own customs, culture and knowledge with them. Over time they lost their distinctions and melded together. What remains is a drive for advancement, specifically in technology. The Hyur (likely Midlander Hyur) are much of what drives technological advancement in Eorzea, and as the most populous race in the region they have likely brought Eorzea far from where it was.

While Midlanders are more spread all over the region, Highlanders can mostly be found in the ex-city-state of Ala Mhigo and its surroundings. Refugees from the area since the Garlean invasion have boosted the Highlander population elsewhere quite substantially, especially in areas closest to Ala Mhigo.
In general, relations between the two tribes are cordial. However, some Midlanders feel that the Highlander custom of taking surnames that sound like the names of Roegadyn makes them somehow less Hyur. Bringing this up can naturally put a strain on any relation.

Naming Conventions

Hyur bear what some might call 'real-world-like' names. While the two tribes might have similar-sounding names, the names of Midlanders come largely from pre-medieval Anglo-Saxon, Celtic and Briton names, while Highlander names are more medieval Germanic and Normandic.
In surnames the distinction may be more apparent, as Midlanders tend to have surnames relating to a profession, location or a distinct physical feature, while many Highlander surnames originated as nicknames on the battlefield.
