Killer Mantis

The word 'mantis' came to the English language in the 17th century. Its origins are in Latin, and through that in the Greek word mantis, which means 'seer' or 'prophet'. It came to refer to the insect because of their habit of holding their forelimbs as if they were praying. In ancient Greek the word was sometimes also used to refer to a type of a grasshopper.
