This page concerns itself with the taxonomical classification of life within the world of Vana'diel. This includes the game Final Fantasy XI and all its various types of expansions and additions, as well as official supplementary materials.

Establishing the Taxonomy System

For once, there isn't much work to be left to the individual when looking to establish taxonomical ranks that conform to the world, in Final Fantasy XI. The ranks are mostly given out by canon materials themselves, the established ones being Family (rl Class), Class (rl Order), Type (rl Genus) and species, making the missing ranks Domain, Kingdom, Phylum and Family.

The Level of Science

The level of science/technology within Vana'diel needs to be taken heavily into consideration when building a taxonomy system that could be built by a person from Vana'diel. As such, any division based on cells is out, as it is very doubtful indeed that they would have that level of technology available. Not much else can be said about the level of technology. They have blacksmithing and such, but mostly rely on synthesis to (crystal-based technology) to make things, which makes it rather hard for us to say what they would be capable of. Sentient life created out of magic and some relatively simple handycrafts, yes, but what else?

As for scientific understanding, it has been mentioned1 that at least one professor, Clavauert B Chanoix, advocates the theory of evolution…to a limited degree. He has surmised from his studies that all species of rabbits found in the Middle Lands share a common ancestor, and their fur color has simply changed somehow since those times. It bears noting that this theory is considered crazy, and it doesn't even hint at species-to-species evolution, only at changing characteristics within one species. It must be deduced that evolution is not an accepted theory within the world of Vana'diel2.

Filling in the Ranks

For Domain, the science within the world of Vana'diel isn't advanced enough to differentiate between entities based on how their cells are structured. This rank can be safely be ignored, and should be.

Kingdom as a rank is definitely one that should be had in any self-respecting basic taxonomy system. However, the problem remains of how to divide various beings into Kingdoms. Our clues for this mostly come from the names (and contents) of the Family rank, and the FF14 Kingdom system since the two worlds are rather similar in terms of technology. In FF14, division is made into entities with a circulation system, those that don't have one, and entities that are perceived as having come from other worlds. Looking a the Families in FF11, the same kind of division makes sense for Vana'diel as well. For this reason, we'll transfer the FF14 Kingdom names into Vana'diel and end up with the Kingdoms Bloodborn, Bloodless and Transcendent. The rl Kingdom animalia is included within Bloodborn, while rl Kingdoms plantae and fungi are within Bloodless.

There is one thing of note within this Kingdom system. 'Transcendents' may include things born in other realms, but beings of foreign origin are only categorized within it if they do not fit into either Bloodborn or Bloodless. This means that, for example, the Void NMs called forth from the Void and appearing in the game's main Vana'diel dimension are not considered Transcendents if they could technically also exist on Vana'diel, or their likeness but another species does exist in this dimension of Vana'diel. Many mobs from the Abyssea dimension are treated in this manner as well. A separate copy-Family and so forth for these is not established under Transcendents, they are placed in either Bloodborn or Bloodless.

While phylum is an important division in rl taxonomy, FF11 gives no indication of having such a thing. Moreover, you would run into trouble calling this rank one thing for animals and another for plants, as the distinction isn't clear (should it still be Division instead of Phylum even in the case of plantoids?). However, it is clear that going straight from, say, Bloodborn and simply lumping the likes of Amorphs and Beasts all together in a merry mix isn't practical.
In consideration of its absence from official sources, we ignore the Phylum rank. However, we go back to Kingdom rank and add Subkingdoms to differentiate between the various groups of Families, such as placing Amorphs into one Subkingdom and both Reptiles and Beasts into another.

This is the rank known as Class irl. In FF11, we are given the names of the Families straight out. There is not really much need for improvisation, we simply place them into the proper Kingdom and Subkingdom.

This rank (Order irl) is known to exist in Vana'diel, although the evidence of its existence isn't quite as strong as for the other ranks. However, onwards we go. The only known Classes are 'Insects' under the 'Vermin' Family and 'Carnivores' under the 'Lizard' Family. From there, we can determine what types of Class should exist under each Family.

This rank isn't known to exist in FF11. In addition, its name clashes with that of the Family (rl Class) rank. In light of insufficient evidence, we ignore this rank. However, we'll go back to Class rank and add Subclasses as needed, such as separating canine and feline carnivores under the Beast Family.

The Type (rl Genus) of a mob is easy to determine. Simply look at its 3D model. If it's the same shape (at least for the most part) as some other mob with different colors, they belong to the same Type. The name of the Type is determined by taking 1) the only species name within the Type, 2) by the first species to have appeared within that Type or 3) the most common species within that Type.
Please note that the Type/Species determination does not always happen according to 3D model. For example, both Wamoura and Wamouracampa are in fact the same species, just in different stages of its life.

Species of a mob is determined as far as possible based on 1) the names of items they drop (ie Tiger Skin) and when that is unavailable, 2) the basic name of mobs of that type. Looks-wise, the different species with a single Type are often color-variants, although this is not always the case.
Please note that the Type/Species determination does not always happen according to 3D model. For example, both Wamoura and Wamouracampa are in fact the same species, just in different stages of its life.

These are different bloodlines within a species. This is where mob names fall, when they aren't names of individuals.

In the previous sections, we have managed to establish a complete working taxonomical system. Its ranks are as below.

Taxonomy Lists

For now, the purpose of this list is not to make either a complete taxonomy of all kingdoms or a complete bestiary. For kingdoms, plants, fish and other critters present in the game as items or animations cannot be found below. Likewise, the bestiary entries that fall under just plain 'machines', 'objects' and other non-living non-animated beings do not belong in a taxonomy system, and have not been listed.
