Overview
Skull Valley (スカルバレー [skull valley] in Japanese) is an area in western La Noscea in Final Fantasy XIV. It faces the Rhotano Sea to the south, and is surrounded by Halfstone/Bald Knoll to the west, Oakwood to the north, and Quarterstone to the east. Within Skull Valley on the shore is the village of Aleport. It bears noting, however, that the area's seen some retcons in the transition from version 1.x to 2.0. Instead of Oakwood, the area to the north used to be Zelma's Run, and Quarterstone itself was part of the greater Skull Valley area in version 1.x. Instead, beyond Skull Valley to the east used to be a portion of Bearded Rock now called Three-malm Bend when Bearded Rock was cut into half in the Calamity. Another retcon is the position of the Woad Whisper Canyon. It used to be accessed from eastern Skull Valley (what is now the Quarterstone area), but since 2.0 it has moved far east.
Skull Valley and its surroundings saw many challenges starting with the Calamity. The Halfstone area (what used to be southern Bald Knoll in 1.x) was flooded by Leviathan and sahagin moved in in its aftermath, changing the general makeup of the area greatly. In response, the North and South Tidegates were built to reinforce the military forces stationed at Camp Skull Valley. The Calamity also saw the appearance of an entrance to a cave complex later named Sastasha, which shares part of its cave system with Mistbeard Cove that used to be situated nearby to the west, but collapsed in the Calamity.
The area gained its name from a battle in 880 Sixth Astral Era, when Lominsan forces were sent to claim it from the kobolds that held the territory in those days. It is said that the skulls of defeated kobolds lined the entire valley, such was their number.
Locations
Camp Skull Valley
Camp Skull Valley (キャンプ・スカルバレー [camp skull valley] in Japanese) was first established in 905 Sixth Astral Era by the Knights of the Barracuda, the first Lominsan military force. Its presence made it possible for people of the five races to colonize the region.1 However, it was a far cry from the fortress it is today, being a lightly manned circle of tents mainly there to defend the region from kobolds. Its current status as a strategic military camp starts with the Calamity when the sahagin invaded Bald Knoll, making heavy military presence an absolute requirement.
Founder's Crypt
The Founder's Crypt (エールグヘームルの墓 [aerghaemr no haka] or 'aerghaemr's grave' in Japanese) is a memorial built to remember the Halfstone settler Aerghaemr who stayed behind to buy the other settlers time to escape when the sahagin invaded.
Hall of the Novice
Hall of the Novice (初心者の館 [shoshinsha no yakata] or 'manor of the beginner' in Japanese) is a recently built establishment aimed at teaching the basics of battling to novice adventurers. Their disciples can be found in every major city, in search of novices to teach.
Tidegates
The North and South Tidegates (南北防波壁 [nanboku bouhaheki] or 'south north breakwater wall' in Japanese) were built in the aftermath of the great tidal wave brought by Leviathan and the sahagin invasion that came right after. It was seen as a necessary move to stem to spread of sahagin further west from Halfstone, and is currently always manned by Maelstrom forces.
