Overview
The Silver Bazaar (シルバーバザー [silver bazaar] in Japanese) is a hamlet in western Thanalan, right off the coast of the Rhotano Sea - although it bears noting that this is a retcon, as in version 1.x the village was completely landlocked, although near the coast. The area just outside the gates to the east is Hammerlea, although the area has only been called that for a scant few years and before the Calamity counted as part of the greater Horizon's Edge area.
Silver Bazaar has been in decline for a very long time. It used to see major traffic by merchants bringing their overseas wares to Ul'dah when it was first established, and funded the building of the Beaconhill Lighthouse just outside the village to guide all the trade ships to the port safely1. That way of living has since dried out as a result of the rise of Vesper Bay, leaving the residents in worsening poverty. Despite (or maybe because of) this, the village took in a sizable contingent of Ala Mhigan refugees a decade or two ago, large enough that a representative of the Coliseum knew to come there to contact them2.
Since the Calamity, the elite of Ul'dah have longed for sprawling residence away from the refugees lining the city, and as a result the homes of Silver Bazaar's residents are under constant threat of demolition to make space for the rich. Many of the former residents have fled for elsewhere under the constant threat of eviction and harassment. Even in recent days however, a well-trafficked road connects the Silver Bazaar and the city of Ul'dah.
