HELM Activities

HELM is a fan-made term for several different (but similar) activities in Final Fantasy XI. These activities are Harvesting, Excavation, Logging and Mining. All of them require going out and using a tool of some kind on a specific location to receive items. The items procured by doing HELMing are most often crafting materials, sometimes seeds or saplings to grow in your garden or mission items.

Items Required

There are several different items you either need to or can use to do your HELMing. First are the items that are required to do it. To do your HELM activity, you must trade the required item to the appropriate point. For example, you would log by trading a Hatchet to a Logging Point.
Each of the required items stack up to 12, and has a chance of breaking upon use.

Hatchet (Logging)
Pickaxe (Mining, Excavation)
Sickle (Harvesting)

In addition to these, there are some equips that increase your luck while HELMing. In practice this means that you will break your hatchets, pickaxes and sickles less often, and might possibly have a better rate of obtaining rarer items.
There is only one difference between the NQ and HQ of this equipment set, and that is how much defense the pieces have. There is no effect on your HELMing activities.

Body: Field Tunica / Worker Tunica
Hands: Field Gloves / Worker Gloves
Legs: Field Hose / Worker Hose
Feet: Field Boots / Worker Boots

Finding the Points

Not all the HELM activities can be done in every area of the game. Refer to the lists below to find the right zone for your activity. Also note that while there are a set number of points that a HELM activity point can appear in, the actual location of these points is random, and there cannot be more than a set number of points available at any given time. This number is lower than the number of possible spawn points in the area.

Each time that you use an item at a point, there is a chance that it will disappear and move to another of the possible spawn points in the area. It is possible that the frequency of the HELM activity point disappearing is affected by the Field/Worker tunica sets.
