Crafting in FFXIV

This page remains incomplete.

Crafting in Final Fantasy XIV plays a major part in the game's economy, what there is of the economy. Crafting classes - the Disciples of Hand - are full classes comparable in many ways to fighting classes, coming with their own tools, abilities and ranks, as well as their own specific quests and leves.

The Basics

To pick up crafting, one must only buy or otherwise obtain a main-hand tool of the profession they vie for, easily managed to unlocking the class through their level 0 quest. You will later need off-hand tools as well, if you keep up with the class's quests you will eventually obtain one around level 10.

The items a crafter will need vary greatly, from finished equipment to equipment parts to raw materials. However, the most important items for a crafter are crystals of all kinds. While low-level synthesis often requires only one or two crystal shards, the higher-level recipes may require dozens, and full crystals or clusters besides.

Synthesis Progress

Actual synthesis is carried out by opening up your crafting log1. Within the crafting log you can see various recipes you have unlocked, both through leveling and through other means. Recipes that you can't attempt due to too low level or insufficient stats are greyed out on the recipe list, and when you select a single recipe from the list any materials you don't have (or don't have enough of) in your inventory are greyed out, indicating that you can't craft that recipe at the moment.

Once you have picked a recipe to follow, the crafting sequence will begin. The item will have a certain durability amount, and every direct action performed will consume some durability, and will have varying chances of success based on the condition of your synthesis. Your goal is to have progress hit full before durability hits 0, with as high a quality rating as you can manage. Raising quality raises the chances of the item you're crafting turning out HQ (high quality). If your crafting attempt reaches 0 durability without progress hitting 100% at the same time, the synthesis is a failure and you will likely lose some or all materials used in the synthesis. When your level is far above the level of the recipe, you have a good chance of recovering all materials used in a botched synthesis.

Synthesis Condition
The condition of your synthesis is visible as a ball of light on your crafting table (whatever form that table takes). The 'success' referred to below can vary in meaning between 'succeeding at all' and 'gaining critical quality/progression'. However, do note that a failure will never take more than 10 durability.
Excellent - rapidly changing colors - very good chance of success
Good - red - better than normal chance of success
Normal - white - average chance of success
Poor - purple-black - lower than normal chance of success

Crafting Abilities
Using crafting actions and abilities commonly consumes CP, or Crafting Points. There are various abilities that restore CP as well, as well as restore durability or any other effects. The best crafters will have available to them abilities learnt by almost all crafting classes.

Other Crafting

Aside from crafting entirely new items, Disciples of the Hand are capable of various other activities. Brief descriptions of these are listed below.

Desynthesis
The Desynthesis skill can be used at crafter level 30 and above. It requires completing the quest Gone to Pieces to access. In desynthesis, you break apart an item to its basic components, and have a chance to gain desynthesis skill. Each of your crafting classes has its own desynthesis skill level, between levels 1-100. Note, however, that unlike regular crafting levels, there is a cap on total desynthesis levels you can gain. You can't have more than a total of 300 desynthesis levels total (including the level 1 skills of your crafting classes above level 30), if you gain desynthesis skill after this, some other desynthesis skill will lose levels. This means that if you have all crafting classes leveled, you can max out two desynthesis skills to level 100, and have a third one to a max of 92.

Repairing
Available from the moment you pick up your crafting tool, Disciples of the Hand can repair the durability of equipment. The repairing is done by the same class that made the item in the first place, and can be significantly cheaper and more effective than the repairs NPCs carry out. Note that as of 2.0, you don't have to be on the appropriate crafting class to repair something, it's enough that you have it leveled high enough to repair the item.

Recipes

The game itself provides you with the Crafting Log2, which lists all recipes available to you. You can also browse the various recipes below. Leveling recipes you obtain automatically when high enough level to craft them, the Master recipes you must first obtain the appropriate recipe book for, after reaching level 50.

Note that the game's crafting log mostly follows the divisions below, although some exceptions are present. In the game Housing items are placed in the Special category recipes, but below they have been included in the appropriate level range for the appropriate class. Other Special category recipes are listed under All Classes below, as they can indeed be crafted by all classes.
