An ability or ability group that enables you to sing songs with different effects. Usually appears on Bard-type jobs. When using Sing, some games pick the song automatically based on your weapon, and some let you choose from the list.
歌う / うたう [utau] or 'sing' in Japanese.

Final Fantasy III

Obtain: initial ability on Bard
Other: dependent on what harp you have equipped. No harp means no song. Possible songs Minuet, Minne, Requiem, Paeon, and Elegy
Other: as 'Bardsong'
Other: this ability is present in the DS version, it replaces the two native BRD abilities from the NES version (Boon and Threaten)

Final Fantasy IV

Usable by: Gilbart Chris Von Muir, others (DS version only)
Obtain: initial ability on Gilbart
Obtain: receive the Augment from Gilbart in Troia after defeating the Dark Elf
Effect: (DS version) sing a song you have learned. Refer to the Attacks of FFIV page for details
Effect: (earlier versions) sing a song that depends on the harp currently equipped
Other: (DS version) as 'Bardsong'

Description: Activates a song with various effects. By pressing the button the song is charged. Depending on the charge time, the song cast changes
